The afterimage project began with an opening task of creating and afterimage of the Gateshead car park. I took inspiration from its recent demolition and the process used. By recreating the demolition process using a model of the car park, I was able to map out the shadows created back on to the site thus creating a new terrain/topography. Using the façade of the car park, I created a puzzle which was reconfigured and placed back on to the site giving the illusion of a complex floor plan.
This lead me to take an archaeological approach to the site thus layering, digging and carving as well as revealing hidden structures within the landscape became a key aspect of the project. The subterranean nature of the structure meant that shadows and the way day light enters the building was important.
